Muriel Ballan

Nan, Mum, Wife

Muriel is currently living in a Dementia care home on the coast, she has mentally left us and doesn't recognise her friends or family anymore. Compared to the woman I remember, loving, full of life, always busy. Nan to me was someone I looked up to a great deal, she was affectionate and hard! She loved her ice cream, coffee and chocolate, as well as her three children, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. The loss will be felt again when her physical form leaves us for good.

  • A very early photo of me with Mum, I'm about 2, Mum must have been 23ish. I think we were bridesmaids for my Dad's sister Mavis. People used to say she looked like Audrey Hepburn 💜

Memories & stories

  • Nan & Kids

Nan has always had a love of babies and children, having had three herself and then fostered several when younger. She loves to get down on their level and play with them. Even now babies and kids bring a smile to her face and one of the few times we get to see emotions now.

  • France Yearly Holidays

Most years we would spend two weeks on Nan and Grandads yacht in the south of France, with them joining us for part of it. I remember going out for dinners late into the evening, and would love falling asleep on my Nans lap under the table!

  • AbuDhabi 2014

Although by this time Nan's dementia was already very apparent she did still recognise us, we took her to see her daughter Kim in AD for a holiday. One of the small positives from Dementia was the forgetfulness of what she hated, we got her swimming (with dolphins non the less!) eating red meat and drinking too much wine. Even though it was a tough holiday it was her last and one I will remember with fondness.
